English as an Additional Language Learners

In JAIS we build bridges through the medium of the English Language.  Students join from all over the world. Our first emphasis is to get everyone to communicate by building up their English proficiency through general support and English as an Additional Language (EAL ) support.

The main goal for these English language learners is to access the curriculum and community life at JAIS by developing their communication and translating  language and concepts into English.

During this process, they are supported by all their teachers, with additional input from the inclusion teams’ EAL services, as required.

Students Who are proficient or Fluent in English

Most of our students are English speakers or have already learned English to a level of fluency/ functionality/ confidence.  For these students, the goal is to provide a strong grounding in an additional language in our World Languages Program. To this end, we offer small group lessons in the local languages of Hebrew and Arabic, and from Grade 1 onwards, Spanish. The lessons may have a range of ages as the priority is to make groupings around levels of fluency. The language groups are small in number with a high ratio of adult-child attention.

Students in Early Years and Kindergarten

In our unique position of building bridges across Jerusalem, the focus is on local languages and students enjoy a session a week of songs and games in Hebrew and a session a week of songs and games in Arabic.
