The JAIS Middle School, serving students in the sixth through eighth grades, is characterized by its high standards of academic excellence within a school setting that recognizes and reflects the needs of our students to feel connected. We pride ourselves on meeting the unique needs of adolescents and are committed to providing an educational experience that responds to the emotional and social needs of our students. We are the bridge between being a child and becoming a young adult.
The middle school curriculum framework uses a combination of the recent Common Core Standards and American Education Reaches Out (AERO) standards to guide our assessment and instructional practices. AERO standards were designed through a project supported by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools (A/OPR/OS) and the Overseas Schools Advisory Council to assist schools in developing and implementing standards-based curricula. Because learning is a continuum, these standards identify particular academic and dispositional behaviors appropriate to grade level and grade level bands.
Core Middle School classes include Humanities, Math and Science. Our Modern Language Department offers French, or Spanish as their choice of Modern Language. In addition, students in Middle School take Art, Music, and Physical Education. Computer Technology Education is integrated into core subjects. Opportunities to explore other areas of interest are offered within the framework of the exploratory program. Interdisciplinary work is also highly encouraged within core disciplines and across the school. Support is offered to students with special learning needs, including English Language Learners (ELL) to non-native English speakers and Resource Center (RC) to students with learning disabilities.
